The first way you can use baking soda on your carpets is to get rid of odors. This includes pet odors or even odors from past food stains. This is essential because you may not see the carpet stain, but your whole house will have an unpleasant smell.

Sprinkle Baking Soda on Carpet
The first thing you’ll want to do is sprinkle baking soda where the carpet smell or odor might be located. It might just be one specific spot where you know your pet hangs out a lot or where your kid peed that one time.
Make sure that you give the baking soda enough time to work. Don’t rush to the next step. If not, then it might not work at all.
Be generous when applying the baking soda. If you don’t apply enough, then you may have to repeat the process several times. We recommend allowing the baking soda to sit for a few hours. You can also leave it overnight if the odor is too strong.
A bonus step is to add a few drops of an essential oil where the smell is. This will help mask the strong odor.
Vacuum the Area with the Baking Soda

Soak Up the Grease
Before you think about applying anything to your carpet, you must first soak up the grease on the stain. For this, we recommend using paper towels or an old rag.
You’ll have to blot up as much of the grease as you can. Beware that we are saying to blot up the grease, not rub it. If you start rubbing the greasy stain, then it can start to settle in the carpet.
Sprinkle Baking Soda and Leave It Overnight
Once you have soaked up the majority of the grease, it’s time to move to the next step. You’ll need to sprinkle baking soda where the stain is and leave it overnight.
The longer you let the baking soda sit on the carpet, the more grease it will absorb. So, as we said before, don’t rush to get to the next step.
Apply Dish Soap If Necessary
The next day you’ll want to vacuum the area. If you notice that there’s still a stain, then you can apply a little bit of dish soap. Just as you did in the first step, you’ll have to blot the soap into the stain to reduce the amount of grease.
After this, take more paper towels, apply a little bit of water, and start removing any residues from the dish soap. An alternative is to use vinegar and Borax to remove stains on a carpet. You’ll just have to follow the same process as with the soap.
Dry the Stained Area
Now you can dry the stained area until it is slightly damp. Next, you’ll repeat the whole process again but only let the baking soda sit for three hours.
Then, you can finally vacuum it until it is completely dry. You’ll find that the stain is gone and there is no grease left behind.
Remove Non-Greasy Stains
You could also have a carpet stain that is not greasy. If this is your case, then it will be much easier to remove the stains with baking soda!
The steps for this are just the same as the other methods. The difference here is that you need to lightly mist the stained area with hot water. This is after you’ve applied the baking soda.
